Latest incarnation of my K1200R

Postby Ignore Amos on Mon Jan 09, 2006 1:55 am

Ok...I've been having a blast modifying my KR, here's a pic (and an overexposed one at that) as I have just added the Schnitzer (Powercup style) headlight cover and bellypan. Headlight cover came in a matt flat black finish and the bellypan was a Gelcoat white- put the headcover on as is and Kryloned (I really don't the patience for a formal paint job) the bellypan a semi gloss black- came out surprisingly well! For those who don't know- I was also able to convince my local dealer to exchange Dark Graphite plastic for Silver plastics off my bike- now mine is black/Graphite and his is all Silver- fair trade in my book.

So my list of aftermarket itiems is as follows:

Akrapovic exhaust
Evo dual filter kit
Evo Billet clutch slave cyl
Evo peg kit
Evo Blue lights
AC Schnitzer Headlight cover and bellypan
KTM 950 Handguards
Ventura Headlight protector
PitBull rear stand..

Awesome! Wish I could strike a panel trade deal, but I guess I'll need to krylon the whole thing. Where did you get the AC Schnitzer parts? Do you go through a BMW dealer? I can't find prices, either.

I'd say the exposure is perfect for the bike; Otherwise we'd have a black hole in the middle of the street.

Ignore Amos- Your bike looks awesome! I have been seriously considering the AC Schnitzer bellypan. Did you aquire yours' out of Canada? I was informed it ships with primer finish. Is that how you received it? If so, did you have it painted with a matt finish to match the cooler covers? Or, did you have the cooler covers painted the same finish as the bellypan?

and here is the info I posted a while back under bellypans

and Headlight cover (they are currently running a 25% off retail special) for my R and should be here in a couple of weeks (coming from Germany). I think my cost was $581 for the pan and $232 US plus shipping from

Groupe Autobahn 8 inc.
www.autobahn8.com
514-209-8001 (Montreal)

Don't know if they are still selling with the 25% discount

I used Krylon semi flat black with a couple of coats of krylon primer and it matches the side panels pretty well (at least for my standards)

Hi Ignore:

Great looking bike!

What is the material of the bellypan, is it CF or fiberglass?
Were the items in stock item or special order from Autobahn?

BTW, I saw this listing from boxer-design.de:
http://www.boxer-design.de/en/powerracerk12ree.htm

Looks like fiberglass but price (painted) at 296 Euro (+96 Euro for painted) is good

Anybody in the US familiar with doing business with them? I sent them e-mail inquiry last week and no response so far.

Thanks,
Awdnut

I was informed from Autobahn that the AC Schnitzer bellypan material is polyurethane. The Boxer Design is fiberglass. I have ordered parts from Boxer Design, currently on the way, and found that I have to follow up to get a response. When considering the Boxer-Design bellypan, which is fiberglass, notice the inlets directly behind the tire. No other manufacturer appears to incorporate openings at that location. It seems the tire would throw dirt, mud into the engine through the inlets. And, for that reason, will probably purchase the AC Schnitzer from Autobahn.

bellypan

Postby Ignore Amos on Mon Jan 09, 2006 3:47 pm

To my untrained eye- I'd say the inside of the belly appears to be a composite layer (looks mostly like a C/F material) with the exterior of the pan to be a polyurethane outer coat. I didn't like the Boxer design for exactly the same reasons, the cutouts The AC Schnitzer looks exactly like the powercup style with the same exact Naca duct on the side. Fit and finish on the Schnitzer stuff seems to be pretty good- everything lined up first time on the install. Headlight cover took all of five minutes to install, nice design and quality.

A question re. using bellypans. I currently have the K12R with center stand and understand it won't work with the bellypan. I thought the reason for using the center stand was to prevent flat spots on the tires. When I read about people using the bellypan, they usually buy the Pit Bull for their rear tire, not the front. Wouldn't they be using the Pit Bull to prevent flat spots? If so, what about the front tire? Or, are the using the Pit Bull for a reason I don't understand? Lastly, I've been thinking about buying the bellypan and cutting it so I can use the center stand as-is. Any thoughts?

Thanks Alan

Just got a response from Boxer-Design that they will have another version of the belly pan and some other parts for the K1200R in two weeks. I guess I will wait to see.

I am planning to paint the belly pan black so a waste for me to spend the money on CF one

The PUR material on the ACSchnitzer kinda make it more resistant to ding though

I got the PitBull mainly for convenience when working on the bike. Plus I have more space in my garage parking my bike on the PitBull.

I enquired boxer Aug 05 about a bellypan that'll fit with centre stand. They initially said Oct 05 then later said it'll be sometime early 2006.

I'll let you know if I hear any more.

Stunning bike! :D

I'm looking at painting my Yellow bike in a BMW Carbon Black colour so this is a great example to help me visualize. I've also been studying the AC Schnitzer Pan and Windscreen but had trouble visuallizing it in anything but Orange....

Can you comment on wind protection of the screen vs. Stock (did you have the sport screen or little one?)?

Also, can you tell me where to get the handguards and exactly which part it is. I've been looking for those and I suspect they're a much better deal than the CF parts out there. And they look great!

Thanks
Mark
