Ducati 848Evo Announced

Postby ssduc on Wed Jul 21, 2010 9:54 am

Ducati has announced the new 848 Evo.

I know this is a BMW forum, but I think this is relevant because the 1000RR has started an HP war and it has been interesting to watch the competitors respond. This is Ducati's first reply. 140 HP from an 849cc twin out of the box is incredible and implies that 190HP from the 1198 is not out of the question at all.

Please Ducati, Give me a V-4 already!!!

An affordable V-4, and I'll be picking up a Ducati next...

HEHEHEHE, everytime i read/hear "afordable" and "Ducati" in the same phrase can't help smiling.

It's said that Ducati have a surprise ready for the MotoGP race in Laguna seca, it can be about Rossi's whereabouts or the hypothetical V-4 superbike...

About the 848EVO...well, it's a review of the 848, but nothing new under the sun, they should have throw in the 1198 TC.

$70k for a Desmosedici RR does not equal affordable.

You and I both know that they could release a V-4 for less than $20k. That, while not exactly my kind of affordable, would put me a lot closer to owning one. Don't get me wrong, I love my current Ducati, but they're running out of development room on the V-2, if they intend to keep up in the horsepower wars (and I really hope they do :-).

There already is a Ducati V4, it's called the Aprilia RSV.

Don't hold your breath for Ducati to make a 4 cylinder Superbike. Desmosedici aside, Ducati is a V-twin company. If the Ducati 1198 can push 200HP it becomes more about making the bike rideable then simply adding more HP.

That said, Ducati has some big announcement for Laguna. If the news is a release of a V4 1000cc bike, I withdraw the above statement! :D

Not out of question at all doesn't sound quite right. Motorrad magazine at Germany has tested 50 000km with smaller 1098:
http://www.motorradonline.de/de/motorraeder/tests/dauertests/dauertest-abschlussbilanz-ducati-1098/283733?seite=4

Poor translation:
Maintenance and repair costs / Mileage (tyre changes removed):
Termignoni mufflers mounted Plate light repair 11 614
Failure of the electrical 12 674
Front brake pads renewed 12 880
Defective fuel pump relay replaced (warranty) 17 061
Brake pads rear 17 496
Chain set and air temperature sensor (warranty replaced) new software update 21 465
Cracked battery box stuck 24 926
Middle piston cracking and middle exhaust pipe, Lambda probe and cracked battery holder replaced (warranty) 25 952
Front discs (guarantee) and clutch plate pack renewed 30 316
Oil cooler oil line fitting to loosen, by loss of oil 33 763
Clutch basket and hub, brake pads rear fuel line and replaced 36 204
Steering head bearings, speedometer sensor and renewed Kettengleitschuh 40 555
Gas trains, track record and vibration grinding protection renewed 42 684
Alternator regulator replaced (warranty) 48 138

Anyhow it get 30 points from 100 in Motorrad test. The worst bike ever in Motorrad endurance test. The second worse is Ducati 999:

1198 has even bigger pistons (1098 piston cracked already) and more stress everywhere. With 190hp version it would probably easily get the last position in that test.

Interesting Eka, but I am skeptical of that list. I follow Ducati boards pretty closely and the 1098 series has very, very few complaints. Even if true, I'll take a 1098 over the #1 on that list anyday!

I could probably get 300hp out of a V-2, but I really don't want to be rebuilding the motor every 100 miles...

+1 to Eka's post, that's what I meant by running out of development room.
